In the 21st century, the free world is facing tyranny, which seeks to eliminate every expression of freedom. Today, the fiercest fight for freedom is happening here, in Ukraine. Ukrainians more than anyone understand the price of freedom and its fundamental principles.

The book "On Freedom" by Timothy Snyder is a call to rethink the essence of freedom.

"Freedom is about knowing what we value and bringing it to life. So it depends on what we can do - and that, in turn, depends on others, people we know and people we don`t. Freedom is not just an absence of evil but a presence of good." Timothy Snyder writes in On Freedom.

So, what is freedom, and what is its essence?

We will discuss these and other important questions with the historian:

  • Why is freedom not a given but a task?
  • How can philosophical reflections on freedom guide us toward better governance?
  • What can Ukraine's struggle teach the world about the meaning of freedom?
  • What is Ukraine's place in world history, particularly during the war?

The discussion will be moderated by Volodymyr Yermolenko, a Ukrainian philosopher, editor-in-chief of UkraineWorld (Internews Ukraine), and president of PEN Ukraine.

The discussion is held on Sunday, February 9, at 17:00 at the bookstore Sens (Khreshchatyk, 34).
