A brief summary of this episode

Parallels in Russian Tactics

Russia has used extreme violence in both Syria and Ukraine, not for military advantage but to terrorize civilians and establish control through fear.

Types of War Crimes Committed

Targeting civilians without military justification: attacks on infrastructure, hospitals, and evacuation sites.

If you look at all these attacks, it has no military merit. Most of the time, there's not even a military distinguishable target there.

-Raji Abdul Salam.

Tactics Used: Double Tapping and Urbicide

Double tapping: A brutal tactic where Russia bombs an area and then strikes again when rescuers arrive, targeting civilians and medical teams.

“Double tapping is one of the most heinous and unethical attacks you could do... Russians did double tap not only on neighborhoods but even hospitals in Ukraine.” - Raji Abdul Salam.

Urbicide (Destruction of Cities): Russia follows a pattern of systematically destroying cities, as seen in Grozny, Aleppo, Mariupol, and Bakhmut.

“If you look at how Grozny was destroyed, how Aleppo was destroyed, and now how Mariupol and Bakhmut were destroyed — you can see that the same tactics were used.” - Raji Abdul Salam.

Psychological and Systematic Torture

Torture was used not to extract information but to instill fear and establish dominance. “They were trying to pacify a danger, to set an example. Russians perceive cruelty as a management tool — a way of showing domination.” - Raji Abdul Salam.

State-Sanctioned Impunity

Raji Abdul Salam:

The Russian Duma created laws to sponsor such impunity, ensuring their soldiers would not be held accountable in any court for crimes committed in Ukraine.
