Biologist Starts Business after Returning from War

March 2, 2021

Bizhan Sharopov is a war veteran, biologist and a co-founder of Ukrainian Genetic Technologies, a company that produces reagents.

When Russia’s war against Ukraine broke out in the country’s East, Bizhan went on the frontline as a volunteer. He served as an artillery observer and a rifleman in the first, the most intense year of the battles.

After coming back from the war, Bizhan continued his scientific career and started a business. In 2016, he and his team of fellow veterans created Ukraine-made reagent kits mostly used by private labs. Now, he is working on another business project in a similar field.

Bizhan is also a researcher at the Bohomolets Medical University in Kyiv. His team is developing methods to treat cancer more effectively by delivering chemo directly to the affected organ and conducting studies of the male reproductive system to help with issues of fertility. Before the war, Bizhan wanted to go abroad. But now he is staying to develop science in Ukraine.
