Ukraine produces around 15 million tons of household waste annually, 30% of which is purchased food. To change this, German-Ukrainian entrepreneur Rostyslav Kosyura returned to Ukraine and founded the country's first foodbank, called Tarilka.org (Plate). Following the example of the German Tafel, it now rescues food from 7 supermarkets in Lviv.
To cook for and feed the poor and homeless, Tarilka cooperates with other charity organizations. Over 2 weeks, they collected and used a ton of food otherwise set to be wasted. During the quarantine, the foodbank saved restaurant meals to feed doctors working with coronavirus patients.
As Tarilka is preparing to open its first charity shop, Rostyslav is negotiating with more stores in Lviv and activists in Kyiv. His dream is a Ukrainian Tafel with food banks all around the country.
